Agreed, when they are no longer used, then the equipment tied to it become paper weights.

At least, there are virtual machine/emulators which let people use older desktop and mobile operating systems to run older software, so people can continue to use old software and apps if they still have the installer files to install them.

True, most wouldn't understand how to use VMs properly though. VMs can be tricky to use.

VMs can also be very slow on computers with a slow CPU and less RAM.

Yep, if they aren't high end, they won't run VMs very well.

I think there are very basic versions of Linux and Android which may run decently on VMs installed on slower computers.

somewhat light weight linux OS does help, specially with those who don't want to use windows.
