Certs are nice, but they can never prepare a person for the real world or how a business is actually setup.

Some Cert books and courses may occasionally talk about how to deal with angry customers which can give readers a general idea on how to prepare for angry tech support calls.

I heard some businesses use very outdated tech which may not be covered in most certs.

I don't think the comptia or cisco would cover that, it's why most should work customer service for a year to learn that stuff.

This is true, certs don't always prepare workers for real life work environment where they maybe helping people who are not tech savvy.

There is always a chance that certs cover tech which is too new, but the tech never becomes very popular like Windows 8.

I've talked to people who taken the Windows 8 cert and fully regret it as being a waste of time considering how fast MS killed the OS.
