I think there are very big battery power banks which can keep a desktop computer powered for a longer amount of time, so you can at least finish your work and properly shutdown your PC.

UPS can help with that, but they can be a pain to manage and are extremely heavy to deal with.

The replacement batteries can cost a lot of money sometimes as well.

Most places need a full rack, costing thousands. It's a nice lesson to learn how much IT can cost and then throw away eventually.

I imagine some of the batteries get stolen by criminals if the company does not have good security systems.

True, many would steal the batteries and resell them to make a quick buck or power their own IT environment.

I feel some people may use an extension cord to steal power from the battery UPS during a power outagw.
