Hopefully, there would be no issues, but laptops, Windows, and software sometimes slow down after a few years because of a virus, software update problems, and aging hardware.
If the persons laptop is slower laptop, he may end up replacing it before more issues come out since Windows 10 and software don't run fast on slower laptops because they usually have low RAM, a slow CPU, and slower built-in video chips. The cooling system on some low quality laptops are not good, and the fan may fail after a few years.

Re: black screen after login?
the guy actually just had a SSD put in, so I'm wondering if maybe the account transfer from the HDD to the SSD caused an issue?

Re: black screen after login?
Maybe there was a software and hardware problems during the copying of his hard drive data to a SSD. Data sometimes does fail to copy correctly, and the data becomes corrupted.
Sometimes broken RAM, and hard drives can cause errors when copying files.
I think some of hard drive to SSD drive copying software maybe not be as reliable as cleanly installing Windows from the Windows install disc or USB thumb drive made with the latest Windows install ISO from Microsoft. Newer versions of the Windows install disc ISO may contain bug fixes for older problems found in older versions of the Windows installer.
I think some of those bundled free disk copying software which come with a SSD, or downloaded for free on a download website may not be as good as paid disk backup and copying software which may test and fix software problems before selling its software to buyers.

all possibilities, though I know his laptop is a bit old. He should have just bought a new one.

Sometimes newer parts like SSDs and newer larger size hard drives don't work as good on older PCs, so the SSD maybe causing errors because of a firmware, BIOS, software, or hardware compatibility problem.

very possible, just too many different settings/parts in pcs these days despite most are made the same but altered slightly by the brand makers.

I feel with old laptops, it maybe best to just buy a new one because of compatibility problems, and broken parts which may still work, but not work as good or at all when doing more intensive tasks like playing a PC game, or watching a HD movie.
There is also a chance that his laptop's charger/power supply, battery, and motherboard's parts used to control electricity levels maybe failing. Chargers, charging ports, and charging parts can fail from old age, rust, heat, moisture in the air, drops of water from rain, or a cup spilling into the ports and keyboard,or being zapped by many power surges from many years of usage. Unreliable power where the electrical voltage, and current are too high or low can cause data corruption problems.
The chips and SATA drive controller ports used for storage may also be failing at random times since storage chips, cables, and connectors do sometimes fail. Bad RAM which is going bad can also cause data corruption errors.
