Symantec slams Firefox again

Post by froggyboy604 »

SYMANTEC'S LATEST Internet Security Threat Report has damned the Firefox browser for having more security holes than last year.

Symantec said that there were 47 vulnerabilities documented in Mozilla browsers this year in comparison to 17 last year. Microsoft also did badly this year, with 38 holes in its Internet Exploder compared to 25 last year. Apple Safari had 12 holes in comparison to six.

Browser outfits were a lot quicker at fixing bugs. Internet Exploder bugs are fixed within nine days, in comparison to 25 days last year.

Firefart only takes on average a day when last year it appears to have fixed the bug a day before it was announced. Apple Safari seems to have slipped a bit. It used to fix bugs on the same day that they were announced, now it takes on average five days. µ

Symantec didn't talk about Opera or Avant browser, or konquerer for linux.
Konquerer is on linux and no one exploits linux based operating systems because Windows is easier

Opera -- although it is fairly secure it has some annoying problems and exploits still roam wild, also it doesn't have the user base FF and IE have,

FF -- i've said it once and i've probably send it thousands of time since then, Firefox is no more secure than letting a complete stranger loose in a mall with your life savings, most FF exploits are found in how it handles javascript,

IE -- not much better but at least it has a UI that can be used to defend against many of the exploits, ie's exploits are found in how it's coded,

Avant technically isn't a browser it's a browser addon, like a new GUI for IE, it still has holes but far fewer than IE as standard,

In relity all browsers can be made rather secure by preventing Javascripts, activex from running,
and installing a Powerful antivirus (ie one you pay for and not junk like Zone alarm)
installing an activex blocker such as spyware blaster, and merging the hosts file contained in spybot with your own

this will block huge levels of adware/spyware/malware/viruses and a host of other things most people aren't aware of, also worth looking for a root kit scanner,

well there are alot of linux's that have gui's like windows

Such as opensuse, Ubuntu

hacks are rare, if ever,

linux versions of browsers, are much better defended against attacks, than windows based, as most people aim to exploit windows,

example. WMF exploit, downlaods a .exe, trojans download as a .exe, same with virus, adware and spyware

.RPM viruses etc, are extremely rare, and would actually require the user to run them,

Command line scripts -- require user interaction

Recent linux installs require no more user interaction than your typical Windows install, most is auto configurated, except the usual "accts" data you have to do, and tell it whether your on a wired/wireless network

Also your internet connection would be in theory be about 1-9% faster

only thing with linux is some applications require compiling, but ALL LINUX's with GUI come with notes on how to do this using inbuilt tools

on a note, Konquerer is Much harder to config than FF, you are probably better off using FF on linux, as it is simple to include an adblocker,

ALso a great feature about linux is Kopete, an IM client that connects to most IM networks, or can be made to with only minor configuration changes
