ALTHOUGH WE knew that Vista sales were mixed for Microsoft, according to Reuters there appears to be a drift backwards to XP.
The wire said that some consumers are seeking out machines equipped with the more compatible Windows XP and PC makers and retailers are re-introducing the OS into product lines. HP, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba are all offering XP machines.
Craig Rabe, owner of the Computer Cafe, an independent computer store in Arlington, Massachusetts, said he received so many complaints about Vista he stopped selling machines loaded with the software.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has told its freshmen to buy PCs loaded with Windows XP. One day MIT will start supporting Vista, a spokesman said. But not yet.
Comp USA has a huge range of XP machines which it is planning flog during the back-to-school sales season. Circuit City wants to sell nine XP models on its Web site.
Even the Windows User Group admit that a switch to Vista can be a bit uncomfortable. Vole says that it has done its best, but there will always be products that do not work with Vista. However it points out that those who upgrade were happy with it.
I bet microsoft was hoping more people continue to buy XP before it got discontinued like win95-me, so they get rid of the existing cds of win xp and in a few years when xp is no longer a relevent OS like 98. The consumer will buy win vista. I remember back when winxp came out a lot of people still like using win98, and as time past fewer and fewer people use 98 on modern PC and switch to XP.
But the difference is there, 98 was always a pile of crap right up until it was scrapped
Also microsoft sell a high % of XP via OEM ie no discs
Vista will not be user ready for at least 1 year after it's release date, as with every windows release barring Win95/98 which were never ready.
XP is a relatively stable platform, Vista still has MANY quirks and stupidity to be ironed out overall if you cna get a working copy vista is an okay operating system, but it's trying to hard to be a Windows linux hybrid, when it should focus on being a windows machine,
I feel Microsoft is trying too hard for vista to appeal to the hipster crowd that buy Apple products and use OS X while they should really make their OS faster, more stable, cheaper, and have functions most people actually want and replace outdated software like ms paint and sound recorder with better media creation software. Plus, bundle MS word for free.
Thought they already bundled msword or something like it.
Though simply makin the operating system more stable, easy to use, and not releasing a version for every conceivable aspect of the market
Microsoft have made many many mistakes with windows vista, while ALOT of the idea's behind vista are fairly good there implementation is bloody terrible
Application management where you can't execute ANYTHING without a popup including necessery windows services
I find Vista to be decently stable, but it not very compatible with some programs like shoutcast.
Plus, i made desktop, start menus, and folder back to xp style. I also turned off Aeroglass visual feature cuz i didn't like how it look.
I agree those pop ups for deleting and opening programs are annoying. Too many services like tablet PC are enabled in services when a lot of people don't own tablet notebook pcs.
I think they should adopt a windows xp style of operating system
Home, Pro (office), Ultimate [everything]
I have a few version of vista installed, on various machines but i generally just boot to xp, i really do not like the look and feel of vista
What annoys me most of all about windows vista is it's really difficult to turn alledged security features off and the video playback thanks to hollywood is laughable, and many dvd's won't play if they're connected to the internet due to alledged piracy, despite i actually bothered wasted cold hard cash (it was frozen)
I think microsoft should have said in no uncertain terms to Hollywood "Go f*ck a waterfowl" they should also have said something similar that which tore them away from the XP reliability,
I've said it before i'll say it again, "Vista has the uptime of an essex birds knickers" (for those that do not know what an essex birds knickers have to do with anything they spend more time around her ankles than where there supposed to be)
