Reports claim that Sony will cease participation in its much-touted Cell processor manufacturing. According to reports from Gamespot, Sony will abandon its much-hyped association with the costly Cell processor development. The Cell processor experiment has reportedly cost the company around $1.7 billion so far.
Sony is said to hand over the reins of the future development of cell processor development to IBM and Toshiba. It has already been confirmed that Sony has sold its stake in the Cell manufacturing plants to Toshiba at $860 million. Sony is in the last stage of negotiation with both Toshiba and IBM to sell the last elements of its manufacturing unit.
The company is currently aiding the research into the 32nm and 45nm versions of Cell that are to replace the existing 65nm chips.
