In the second episode of SBS Happy Sunday, “Change”, Hyo Ri’s transformation into a ugly fat girl became a hot topic of discussion. In the program, she went onto the streets after special make-up was done to “transform” her into a ugly fat girl in order to gauge citizens reaction towards her.
Hyo Ri, together with Kangin (who also had special make-up on him), host Shim Dong Yup, guests No Hong Chul and Son Ho Young took the subway. All of them sat beside Hyo Ri as they observed how normal folks gauge Hyo Ri.
One of them said, “In the past, many liked Hyo Ri, but now it seems like they like So Hee from Wonder Girls even more right now. She should try changing her sexy image.” He added, “Already 30, she is getting old. She should change her image, it’s best if she can take a prolonged rest to recharge herself.”
Hyo Ri’s face started stiffening after hearing this. She took it in her stride initially but she eventually left her seat and got off the train. Faced with this unexpected turn of events, filming had to be stopped for Hyo Ri to sort out her emotions. But tears started streaming down Hyo Ri’s face at this point. Host, Shim Dong Yup came over to console her and explained, “Hyo Ri is crying because it’s her first time enjoying freedom and can’t adapt to the enviroment.”
Soon after airing on TV, many defended Hyo Ri, “How could they ask a question like this, it seems harmless but actually makes one feel uncomfortable.” “How could the production team embarass the artiste like that?”. It is unfortunate but artistes might think twice about coming on this show.
