Newsflash – PC World Testing States Windows 7 Not Much Faster Than Vista

Post by froggyboy604 »

I can just see the war that will start over this. No one of the fanboys wants to be told that they are ‘in a timewarp’ when using Windows 7, and don’t have a great feel for time. PC World has done some testing, and finds that while Windows 7 is definitely faster than Vista, the difference is not enough to be extremely excited about.

The go so far as to say that you may not notice that much difference. This certainly seems to contradict the paeans coming from the reporters at ZDNet. Over there, Ed Bott seems to indicate that Windows 7 might set your machine on fire, since it moves on the machine so quickly.

Speed Test: Windows 7 May Not Be Much Faster Than Vista

Though Windows 7 edged out Vista in our lab tests, you may not notice much of a difference.

Improving performance is one of Microsoft’s design goals with Windows 7, and many early reviewers (including ours) have said that the new OS seems peppier than Vista. But tests of the Windows 7 Release Candidate in our PC World Test Center found that while Windows 7 was slightly faster on our WorldBench 6 suite, the differences may be barely noticeable to users.

We loaded the Windows 7 Release Candidate on three systems (two desktops and a laptop) and then ran our WorldBench 6 suite. Afterward we compared the results with the WorldBench 6 numbers from the same three systems running Windows Vista. Each PC was slightly faster when running Windows 7, but in no case was the overall improvement greater than 5 percent, our threshold for when a performance change is noticeable to the average user.

The largest difference was 4 points–102 for Vista versus 106 for Windows 7 on an HP Pavillion a6710t desktop. Our other two test machines showed similarly minor performance improvements: A Maingear M4A79T Deluxe desktop improved by 1 point (from 138 on Vista to 139 on Windows 7), and a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop improved by 2 points, from 97 on Vista to 99 on Windows 7.

The article continues with a few graphs, further showing that the differences are less than 5%, which PC World indicates is the threshold of feeling, for the average user.

As someone who felt that this was the case all along, there is a certain vindication for me, though certainly many people will be miffed at the figures and the conclusions.

Hopefully, the permissions GUI, and UAC is improved in 7. One of the biggest problems with Vista were registry permissions. I had to change hundreds of keys, so I can install Visual Studio and OFFice because I did not have permissions to write to the key eventhough I was in an admin account.

Win7 is faster than Vista mayeb not in generaly performance but in actually getting things done it's shit off a shovel compared.

Comparing Operating systems on shite hardware is not a test it's an insult.

i'm not going into my reasons because i will type to much and i do not wish to type more than i have to.

I agree with you Vista is pretty difficult to use when it comes to registry permissions, a few incompatible software like norton, shoutcast, and older programs not fully working or some features work, and other features on older software makes it crash.

I still think WinXP was one of the best OS that MS made.

I never had XP so I can't say it's the best. but any OS that is faster in some way is a win in my book.

I care more about usability since I don't do a lot of graphic intensive stuff like playing Computer games since I don't have a nice $200-500 ATI Video Card.

But, once I sved up enough for a better video card, more ram. I care more about speed.

Speed is all that matters, though a good gfx card is essential if you ever decided to divulge into the realm of gaming, other wise a low end will suffice if your only writing docs/browing web and the like.
