Yes, it is a good time of the year to ask for free tech support from friends and family since everyone is at one place, or might visit you soon.

Or if you offer tech support raise your prices a little to make a little extra money.

People are also cheapest and poorest after the holidays because they spent a lot of money on presents, and Christmas is over, so people are no longer in the giving mood to pay extra for tech support, and most likely look for free or the cheaper alternative like a friend, nephew, neice, son, or daughter who is willing to fix their stuff for free, or for pizza, home made pie, or dinner.
I think How-To websites, Electronic related YouTube channel, Google, Yahoo Answers and Forums will make extra money from ads when people search the internet for free tutorials on fixing computer problems, or an app/program like Advance System Care, or Tune Up Utilities which make their computer faster by keeping it well maintained.
Most new electronics and computer makers usually offer to let you return your stuff for free to be fix if it is still covered by the warranty, or extended warranty which you buy from Amazon, BestBuy, or Radioshack. If they don't honor their return policy for broken stuff, you can use Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, YouTube, News channels, and the Better Buisness Bureau to write or record a complaint for the public to read or watch online or offline with the News, and Newspapers if a reporter agrees to make a story for you.

Indeed, the people who get money will have money, but a lot of people get gift cards for Christmas, and money is not as common as a gift since you can buy Giftcards at a cheaper price then giving actual money, and it proves that you actual left the house or ordered it online to get a gift, so the person you are giving a gift to is less likely to complain or be unhappy because of the smaller amount of money on the giftcard vs. reaching into your wallet, and giving them $10 or less.
I think Amazon, and Apple's iTunes sometimes have sales on Giftcards where you pay less then $25 for a $25 giftcards.

I don't see the point of that as the shipping will still end up costing you more unless you can get it bundled into a large order with free shipping.
