I think a lot of forum owners may use a more lightweight theme as the default theme if the forum is using a cheap or free web hosting plan which may load big image and video files more slowly when more people are on the site because the web server is slower.

It helps that forum themes are made a lot better these days, so they aren't as load intensive.

I think there are newer image file formats like webp which has a smaller size which help with making websited load faster.

It does, but also makes it harder to open images on your PC as windows still can't seem to open webp by default.

I think some older web browsers may also have problems displaying Webp images.

I know they wouldn't be able to read them, as they wouldn't have any extensions loaded up to make them appear.

I think mist people with older browsers and computers may need to convert webp to jpeg to see the image.
