once again that is very possible, but he hasn't reported any further issues. But I've learned anytime after 5 years, its best to upgrade.

It is good that he has no issues for now.
I feel if your PC is used for work, and school, it could be a good idea to upgrade before 5 years like 3 years. Some bosses, or college teachers do not accept " my laptop broke" as a reason to give you more time to finish your work, or homework without punishment.
Laptops sometimes become unreliable before 5 years because electronic parts like motherboards, RAM, hard drives, and SSDs are not built to last these days, and are sometimes made by unskilled workers who are lowly paid.
If your laptop is used to edit video, or create software, and games, and you failed to backup the code or video you edited before your laptop broke, you may lose a lot of work, and money if you rely on editing video, or creating software and games for making money. College courses are also expensive, and if your teacher does not give you an extension on your homework, there is a chance of failing a course if you don't have a high enough grade.
