I think there is also a chance that you get a different item like a piece of rope in the box which may not even be a cable if you buy a fake cable by mistake.

True, I've bought PC batteries before and ended up with pc stylus instead.

I think sometimes people at the shipping company or store may replace the real item with a random item to add weight to the package, so people may not notice the real item is not missing as quickly.
